Cut Your Grocery Bill in Half with America’s Cheapest Family

Cut Your Grocery Bill in Half with America's Cheapest Family: Includes So Many Innovative Strategies You Won't Have to Cut Coupons
This book is great for anyone, no matter your shopping style. They offer hints at the end of each chapter divided by your shopping/cooking style. Styles are “Timid Mouse”, “Wise Owl”, and “Amazing Ant”.
This book teaches the necessity of planning meals in advance & breaks it down into steps. It discusses couponing, freezer (OAMC) cooking, organization, stockpile, money-saving tools, and the importance of family meals. They offer tips and challenges that are easy to implement that will put a major dent in your grocery spending.
They provide valuable information on reading shelf tags, buying in bulk, food storage, which organic products are worth buying, seasonal produce, how to predict sale cycles,  and the cons of “$200 clubs” like Sam’s Club. This book taught me about Rain Checks or substitutions on sale items. They stress how important it is to create a plan before you go to the store, stick to it in store, and pay attention at the checkout.
I love how they stress playing by the rules. Too many websites & other books encourage trying to get around a policy. I am a big fan of ethical shopping.

I have to say Cut Your Grocery Bill in Half with America’s Cheapest Family was probably the best investment I have ever made in my life. This book was recommended to me by a friend & am SO grateful to her for it. Since I bought this book, I have also started cutting coupons and combining couponing with the techniques I learned. I have been able to start building a nice stockpile of household items and grocery items in my pantry. For once, my deep-freeze is actually holding enough food to be worth the electricity it uses and my second fridge holds more than a couple gallons of milk & soy milk.

The best part is: I’m spending less and getting more than I was buying before & I haven’t changed our eating habits. We still eat lots of fresh produce, fish, and nice cuts of meat. I still buy some certain brands on some items (like Mac & Cheese), but have learned that most food taste the same no matter what brand it is. We actually eat a little less processed food, because I actually plan out my week and don’t have to do the last minute freak-out and order pizza.  I love that I am spending less on consumable goods and can focus on more important things, like paying off my house and building a college fund for my children

Fast Orange

I’ve been following Couponing to Disney’s 5-A-Day coupon request plan for a couple of weeks. A couple times a week, I grab a few of my favorite products from around the house and email the manufacturer. I simply tell them something I like about the product and try to give an example of a way that we use it in our house that isn’t typical.

Last week, I found a bottle of Fast Orange (my husband and dad’s favorite hand cleaner for the garage) under my kitchen sink. Not expecting anything back, I emailed Permatex (the manufacturer) and told them how I love it because the bottle comes with a nail brush that I always steal from my husband.  Apparently, they liked my email because I received a full-size bottle with a bonus nail brush (Now my husband can have his back!) in the mail.

This is definitely my favorite response. I’ve received a few coupons for free products and some high value coupons, but no one else has saved me a trip to the store :)

Surveys

Surveys are a great way to earn some extra money (don’t expect to quit your day job) and/or earn points that can be redeemed for prizes. Finding a good survey company can be a little overwhelming. There are millions of results available. Here are a few hints to get you started.

  • Create an email dedicated for surveys. You don’t want to lose an important email from family in survey offers or lose a high-paying survey offer in junk mail.
  • Never pay to receive a list of survey companies or to sign up with a company.
  • If a website recommends more than 5 companies, they are most likely an affiliate site: meaning they are only recommending this companies because they get paid to do so.
  • Most survey companies DO offer incentives for sign-up & for referrals. Only share a referral link if you are honestly satisfied with a company. If you used to be, but are having trouble lately, feel free to say so. People may be willing to check them out.
  • Consider what factors are important to you. Do you want to earn cash or points? Do you want to receive a check or is Paypal okay? Do you want to earn from referrals?
  • Search the internet for survey companies. Select 5-10 that interest you.
  • Perform searches for the companies you are interested in & read reviews of people that have used them. Does the website look like a marketing site? If so, I’d move on. If not, have they received a payment? Do they say why they like the company, what surveys are worth, etc?

Even though it may be tempting to just sign up for the first company you come across, that may cost you more time & money in the long run.

Kristin from Couponing to Disney posts reviews of some of her favorite (and least favorite) companies. I love how honest her reviews are.
